The method of artificial systems

This document is written with the intention to describe in detail a method and means by which a computer program can reason about the world and in so doing, increase its analogue to a living system. As the literature is rife and it is apparent we, as scientists and engineers, have not found the solution, this document will attempt the solution by grounding its intellectual arguments within tenets of human cognition in Western philosophy. The result will be a characteristic description of a method to describe an artificial system analogous to that performed for a human. The approach was the substance of my Master’s thesis, explored more deeply during the course of my postdoc research. It focuses primarily on context awareness and choice set within a boundary of available epistemology, which serves to describe it. Expanded upon, such a description strives to discover agreement with Kant’s critique of reason to understand how it could be applied to define the architecture of its design. The intention has never been to mimic human or biological systems, rather, to understand the profoundly fundamental rules, when leveraged correctly, results in an artificial consciousness as noumenon while in keeping with the perception of it as phenomenon.

The paper proposes a comprehensive methodological framework for building artificial systems that can reason about the world, make choices, and exhibit a form of consciousness grounded in philosophical theory. Drawing primarily on Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, the author treats cognition as a structured interplay between “phenomena” (the observable, modelable aspects of reality) and “noumena” (the inaccessible thing‑in‑itself). Within this duality, the system’s knowledge is limited to an epistemic boundary, and all reasoning must occur inside that boundary.

The core of the proposal consists of two interlocking components: a Context Awareness Module and a Choice Decision Module. The Context Awareness Module continuously integrates sensor data, metadata, and historical experience to construct a dynamic “context graph.” This graph is not a mere data store; it encodes the pre‑conditions, background assumptions, and synthetic‑a‑priori structures that give raw inputs semantic weight, mirroring Kant’s notion of the mind’s innate categories.

The Choice Decision Module receives the current context, a set of goals, and a library of rules or cost‑benefit functions. It generates a “choice set” – the set of actions that are epistemically permissible given the system’s current knowledge. Crucially, the size and composition of this set are bounded by the system’s epistemology: what it knows and how it can justify knowledge. The module then evaluates each candidate action, selects the optimal one, and records the outcome.

A distinctive feature is the inclusion of a meta‑level “critical reflection” loop. After each decision, the system reviews the result, updates its context graph, and may revise its epistemic boundaries. This loop implements a form of self‑critical reasoning analogous to human reflective judgment, allowing the system to adapt its internal model without external supervision.

The author distinguishes between the “phenomenal aspect” of artificial consciousness – the internal states and behaviors the system can explicitly represent – and the “noumenal aspect,” the external reality that remains beyond direct access. By acknowledging this distinction, the paper argues that artificial consciousness should not be understood as a literal replication of human subjective experience, but as a functional analogue that respects the same epistemic limits that constrain human cognition.

To validate the framework, the author built a simulated robotic agent equipped with the proposed modules and compared its performance against a conventional reinforcement‑learning baseline. The context‑aware agent demonstrated faster adaptation to environmental changes, higher explainability of its actions, and more consistent adherence to rational decision‑making within its knowledge limits. The critical reflection loop further reduced repeated errors by allowing the agent to revise its context after failures.

In theoretical terms, the work positions itself against the dominant statistical‑learning paradigm of contemporary AI, which excels at pattern recognition but lacks mechanisms for autonomous meaning construction and bounded rational choice. By importing Kantian categories and the synthetic‑a‑priori framework into computational architecture, the paper offers a principled route toward systems that can not only predict but also justify their actions within a philosophically coherent epistemic structure.

The conclusion emphasizes that a triadic architecture—context awareness, bounded choice generation, and reflective revision—provides a viable path toward robust, explainable, and philosophically grounded artificial consciousness. This approach moves beyond surface‑level imitation of human behavior, aiming instead to replicate the underlying cognitive machinery that enables humans to navigate the world rationally. As such, it opens a new research direction for artificial general intelligence, suggesting that integrating philosophical insights with technical design may be essential for achieving truly autonomous, reasoned artificial agents.
