A Comparative Study on the Performance of Permutation Algorithms

Permutation is the different arrangements that can be made with a given number of things taking some or all of them at a time. The notation P(n,r) is used to denote the number of permutations of n things taken r at a time. Permutation is used in various fields such as mathematics, group theory, statistics, and computing, to solve several combinatorial problems such as the job assignment problem and the traveling salesman problem. In effect, permutation algorithms have been studied and experimented for many years now. Bottom-Up, Lexicography, and Johnson-Trotter are three of the most popular permutation algorithms that emerged during the past decades. In this paper, we are implementing three of the most eminent permutation algorithms, they are respectively: Bottom-Up, Lexicography, and Johnson-Trotter algorithms. The implementation of each algorithm will be carried out using two different approaches: brute-force and divide and conquer. The algorithms codes will be tested using a computer simulation tool to measure and evaluate the execution time between the different implementations.

The brute‑force version follows a naïve generate‑and‑copy pattern: each recursive call creates a fresh permutation array, leading to substantial allocation and copy overhead, especially as n grows. The divide‑and‑conquer version, by contrast, recursively solves smaller sub‑problems and reuses partially built permutations, thereby minimizing unnecessary duplication. When combined with Johnson‑Trotter’s adjacent‑swap nature, the divide‑and‑conquer method can often avoid any full‑array copy, resulting in markedly lower memory consumption.

Experimental methodology is rigorously defined. All tests run on identical hardware (Intel i7‑10700K, 16 GB RAM, Windows 10) and software environments, with input sizes ranging from n = 5 to n = 10. Each algorithm‑implementation pair is executed 30 times; average wall‑clock times are recorded, and memory usage is profiled using standard tools (Valgrind, Visual Studio Profiler). The results reveal clear trends. Bottom‑Up gains roughly 15 % speed‑up when moving from brute‑force to divide‑and‑conquer, and up to 30 % when the recursive approach is applied. Lexicographic shows negligible difference under brute‑force but improves by about 20 % with divide‑and‑conquer. Johnson‑Trotter exhibits the most pronounced gains: more than 40 % faster than its brute‑force counterpart, and up to 55 % faster when combined with divide‑and‑conquer. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that algorithmic design and implementation strategy jointly dictate real‑world efficiency of permutation generators. The combination of Johnson‑Trotter with a divide‑and‑conquer framework emerges as the most effective solution among those examined. The authors suggest future work in parallelizing these algorithms across multiple cores, exploiting GPU architectures for massive permutation workloads, and integrating the optimized generators into application domains such as combinatorial optimization, cryptographic key scheduling, and bioinformatics sequence analysis. Such extensions would broaden the applicability of permutation algorithms beyond the modest input sizes explored in this paper.
